Building Your Own Community of Support
Date: January 13, 2022
Presenter: Jennie Clare, K-12 Education Director, Jennie Clare Consulting
Listen to the presentation
As parents or guardians of children with developmental or mental health diagnoses, we may find ourselves feeling alone and isolated even when surrounded by people. Even friends and family who care about us may not always know how to provide the support we and our families need to thrive. Our minds, bodies, and emotions may become depleted in a manner that results in fatigue, diminished resilience, depression, anger, challenged relationships, and lowered immunity to illness as a result of stress. The usual suggestions for self-care may not be realistic or accessible during times when we feel we are only functioning from one moment to the next. More importantly, typical self-care strategies do not meet our primary underlying need to feel heard, validated, encouraged, and connected to a healthy and dependable system of support.
Human beings are wired to need one another. It is in the context of supportive community that we thrive. Targeting our goals and enhancing our skills for connection within the context of reciprocating friendship with others equips and empowers us toward wellness and healthy relationships.
